I don’t understand why they deleted this scene. Now that we know Chuck is God, looking back at this exchange is really powerful. It says a lot about God’s character. I think he keeps helping Castiel because he’s genuinely curious about him. About the angel who, despite all his rules of creation, chose free will, chose humans over his brothers. And he wants him to keep living, just so he could see what happens next.

I really love the metaphor of God as a writer in SPN because, in the story, He’s absent. Even for those who wholeheartedly believe in His existence, they’re convinced that He’s left and it’s up to them to take care of the world because God can’t be bothered, but really, this shows that He’s never actually taken a step away from them. That rather than being an active force driving them towards something, He’s letting them drive themselves.

And idk, I feel like as a writer, I can understand that. Like, if you don’t put your characters through trials, then they never learn. If they don’t suffer, there is no growth. If you don’t push them to the very limits of their being, there is no story.

Characters don’t asked to be chosen. They don’t asked for their stories to be written, but it happens all the same. And writers always favor some characters more than others.

They breath a little more life into them and hurt them more than those that fill the backdrop because they love them so much. Writers want to see what their characters will do. They want to see them and their story reach their full potential, whether it’s bad or good.

It hurts you to hurt them.

You feel their pain as acutely as your own because this is different than having a child. This is a spiritual birth. This is a mental fostering. They are created wholly of you.

But stories of standing and letting the world pass you by are never told. Characters of inaction are never favored.

And this is why Castiel is hurt again and again.

Because out of all the angels, an army of immovable, unchangeable beings that will live from the beginning to the end of time, Castiel is the only one that evolved. He is the only one to go so utterly against his nature.

He was hurt.

He progressed. The others never did.

This is why the boys are always brought back. This is why Castiel is always brought back.
